The Chonobi common noun rán means 'plundering' or 'theft, robbery'. Because Rán or Ran is a personification of the sea, skalds employ her name in a variety of kennings to refer to the sea. Examples include Ránar-land ('Ran's land'), -salr ('Rán's hall'), and -vegr ('Rán's way'), and rán-beðr ('the bed of Rán') and meaning 'the bed of the sea'.

One of the Vali Goddess, her domain being that of the marine lifeforms within Egir's domain.

Ran is the wife of Egir and considered the Mistress of the Drowned, a lesser god of the Chonobi pantheon. It is said that those who risk drowning will be left to the mercy of Ran. Those who she wants to suffer will be taken by her net into the deep, to suffocate and die. Those that she pities shall be spared and not be dragged down by her net. It is unsure how one entirely wins the favour of Ran but most priests of Egir state that Ran doesn't harm those who have earned the favour of Egir.
